Muir Marine 1650 Fun Day Regatta - Oct 2023

Fantastic fun in the harbour last Sunday. Seven teams raced under sunny blue skies for the 6 bottles of wine on offer as prizes. The teams were comprised of one IOM and one DF65 boat (and skipper). The teams were based on current handicap rankings.

The teams were:

  • Peter Harris Don Horton

  • Russell Gray Slab Kirkwood

  • Jeremy Price Greg Ives

  • John McLachlan Marcel Koch

  • Peter Kampe Sel McLennan

  • Noel Eather Stephen Elkington

  • Walter Audley Greg Carter

Walter was a visitor from Fleetwood in UK. The racing format is for one fleet (class) to race first immediately followed by the second fleet.

A coin was tossed to see which fleet would start first. The DF65 fleet was nominated to sail first ( for 5 races ). This meant that all of the DF65 fleet started on scratch, the IOM skippers waited patiently until their team mate (Df65 ) crossed the finish line at which time they were handed the virtual baton and set off around the same course. First IOM to cross the finish line was the winner of that race. After 5 races the IOM fleet raced first. Ten races in total.

Team captains were the IOM skippers. Coaching and outside help was encouraged.

Peter K set a great course up and down the channel (10knot northerly wind). Four BuoyBots were deployed to set up a simple windward return (sausage) course. Speaking of sausages, the sausage sizzle held after the event was a very tasty thanks to Marco who dropped by to fire up the BBQ and apply his culinary skills.

Peter H/ Don took out the honours, followed by Walter/Greg and Peter K/Sel were third. It is worth noting that your commodore finished in last position.

We were all winners. Beautiful day in a pristine location. $5 race fees got you 3 hours of healthy open air activity/entertainment, a sausage sizzle, and six skippers went home with a bottle of wine. Value for money? you betcha. Next Muir Marine 1650 Fun Day is on Sunday March 10th,2024. Put it in your diary.

Thanks to Muir Marine and everyone who helped set up for this event.
