Coomera Cup 2023

The Coomera Cup 2023, hosted by Wynnum Manly Radio Model Yacht Club (WMRMYC), at Eagleby, was held over the weekend of the 27th and 28th of May.

Saturday’s weather was bright and sunny with light variable winds. The variable winds were a challenge for the PRO, Lindsay Walker, who together with the boat crew did a fantastic job, under very trying conditions, of setting fair and competitive courses.

Buoybots were demonstrated during one of the lunch breaks. The Buoybots are becoming more stable and soon could be considered for future events. Buoybots make course changes very fast.

Sunday had similar weather conditions with the winds becoming more stable later in the day. In the final races the glare from looking into the sun’s reflection off the water at the weather mark tested the skills of the competitors.

A great fun event enjoyed by all. Congratulations to all the competitors and a big thank you to all the volunteers.

The racing was very close, and the winner of the cup was decided in the last race.

Ben Taylor (LMRYC NSW) went into the last race with a 3 point lead over Paul Jones (LMRYC NSW).Paul won the last race and Ben came in sixth. This meant that Paul won the Coomera Cup 2023 (he previously won CC 2022 and 2021) closely followed by Ben. Special mention to Ben who has shown significant improvement over the last 12 months. Sean Wallis (Champion Lakes WA), current Australian Champion, came in third place.

The Masters(over 70) was also a very close tussle between Chis Woods (Champion Lakes WA) and Glen Fitzgerald (Sunshine Coast RSC). Chris was 15th in the last race and Glen came 17th. This meant that Chris won the Coomera Cup 2023 Masters by one point.
