Off shore racing at the Wynnum Jetty
Perfect Sailing conditions in open water!
Wynnum, Australia – June 26, 2025 – Sailors gathered for a lively morning of racing off Wynnum Jetty yesterday, taking full advantage of the high tide and Russell's reliable RIB support. After having council permission to sail the boats of the Jetty, we were good to go ahead! The event, held from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, saw participants meet promptly at 8:45 AM at the seaward end of the jetty, having factored in the walk to the end of the Jetty.
The timing couldn't have been better, with high water at 10:00 AM providing ideal conditions for two hours of spirited racing. Russell, in his essential RIB boat, was on hand to expertly set the course and, more importantly, to ensure no ambitious boats embarked on an unscheduled voyage to New Zealand! His presence offered a welcome safety net and allowed for more adventurous sailing.
Specific race results and individual performances were captured in the movies below. The focus of the day was clearly on fun and friendly competition. Sailors were reminded to come prepared with fully charged batteries and all their sails, ensuring maximum enjoyment on the water.
In an added element of interest, there was an opportunity to test radio range. The plan was for sailors to head windward until losing contact, with Russell's RIB ready for recovery (for a small, presumably humorous, fee!). This not only added an extra layer of engagement but also highlighted the practical aspects of remote-control sailing. We noticed the limiting factor was not the radio signal strength, but our eyesight! At 500 meter away from the Jetty, Bob’sDF65 equipped with radiomaster kit, was still going, but had to be monitored with the accompanying Drone because we couldn’t see what it was doing.
Overall, the Wynnum Jetty sailing event was a success, offering a perfect blend of competitive spirit and relaxed enjoyment, all supported by excellent organisation and a picturesque setting.
